Read Chapters 22-23.

Chapter 22:
1. Mark says, "Whatever I'm looking for, I've found it." What information did James get from Ruth's hometown?

2. Reread the last full paragraph of the chapter from 228-229, focusing on the section where he talks about the greatest gift and the greatest sin. Why does Mark say that his grandmother (Ruth's mother) had not suffered and died for nothing? How does the last line of the chapter relate to what he says in that entire last paragraph? (This response should be quite lengthy for you to explain it in the manner you should.)

Chapter 23:
3. What did Ruth learn from Dennis?

4. Ruth says she accepted Jesus on that day and, "He has never let me down from that day to this." Knowing all she went through, how do you think she can say that?

5. Why was Red Hook Housing Project the best place for them to live? Why was did she say she was living the "real American life"? Define what the American Dream was during that time and how was she living it?

6. When Dennis died, why did Ruth wish it was her and not him?

7. Who did she reach out to for help? Who turned her down and who helped her? Explain what measure she took to survive.

8. Do you think the doctors didn't help Dennis because of his interracial marriage or was it because treatment for cancer was unknown? Do some research to find background on the types of treatments in that time period.
